Active Schools: Shetland Island Council
Shetland on Wheels
In practice, this means that our job is to increase the number of opportunities for all children to get engaged in physical activity and sport. We also try to build bridges with sports clubs and other community organisations to give pupils a ‘pathway’ to continue their participation in sport outside of the school day and the school gates.
Our partners
Shetland Islands Council is responsible for developing, implementing and managing Active Schools within Shetland, and ensuring that Active Schools is integrated within planning for sport, health and education.
The Active Schools Managers and Coordinators are directly employed by Shetland Islands Council and, together with sportscotland, jointly fund Active Schools posts. As managers and Coordinators we work closely with our colleagues in sports development to ensure that our efforts are coordinated.
As part of our ‘Shetland on Wheels’ project we have a number of key partners that have contributed towards the success of the project. They include:
Cycling Scotland
Shetland Community Bike Project
Shetland Wheelers Cycle Club
NHS Shetland
We help
Children and young people ages 6 – 21 in remote and rural communities throughout Shetland.
What difference do we make
The Shetland on Wheels Project offers children and young people in the remote and rural communities throughout Shetland an opportunity to develop bike handling, bike maintenance and road safety skills and learn more about the different types of cycling that exist. This is a wholly new initiative in Shetland.
The Shetland on Wheels Project promotes active travel and provides opportunities for children and young people to develop bike handling, bike maintenance and road safety skills and learn more about the different types of cycling that exist.
By promoting active travel we are aiming to improve incidental physical activity levels. By developing bike handling, bike maintenance and road safety skills we believe we will reduce cycling related accidents in Shetland. By promoting different types of cycling we hope to improve lifelong involvement in cycling either recreationally or competitively.
